Chapter 12

I found Selen with Azar the next day when I went looking for him.

He was watching Azar spread out armfuls of frond-leafed herbs and violet-tinged tubers in the sunny clearing. “Their healing properties will keep for a year or so once they’re dried,” Selen said. “Although I fear your people’s needs will send you here again sooner than that.”

Azar jerked his head toward Moonsilver. “The trip will be easier with her, at least.”

I tamped down a spark of annoyance at the way he was taking my dragon for granted. “Can I speak to you, Selen?” I interrupted, stepping forward.

“Just a moment, Melaera, we’ll be done here shortly.”

But Azar was already dumping down the last of his harvest and stalking away. “You two can talk without me.”

I frowned at Azar’s retreating back. Whatever thin thread of camaraderie had bound us together during the journey seemed to have frayed to nothing of late. Our paths had crossed only rarely the past few days, and when they did, he’d seemed brusque and aloof.

But I turned my attention to Selen, who’d summoned a few vine tendrils to spread out the last of the herbs for drying. He was no longer wearing the circlet, which made it a little easier to look him in the face without blushing. It was hard not to blush, given what I was about to ask.

“Seduce me again,” I blurted out.

A vine snapped, sending tubers rolling. “What?”

“Like you did that night,” I persisted. Not blushing was a lost cause; I definitely felt my face heating up. “I couldn’t get my soul defenses down under my own power that time either, but you got me to lower them. Can’t you do something similar this time, so I can access Moonsilver’s thoughts more easily? I’ve tried again and again, but I can’t do it myself. You can be the help I need.”

Selen looked mildly horrified. “First of all, I’m afraid that it doesn’t work that way. If I, ah, seduce you, it lowers your defenses towards me, not towards Moonsilver.”

“It…might be worth a try?”

“Second of all,” Selen said firmly, “it would be quite unprincipled of me to do it now. Your life was at risk that night, and I would not have played up my wiles so aggressively otherwise. Not to mention…” He averted his gaze. “It would be especially improper now, with the way things have become between us.”

I swallowed. Did that mean he really was interested in me? Did that mean he knew I was interested in him? Was it rejection or acknowledgement?

The questions made a painful clump in my throat. Voicing them was more than I could bear. So like a coward, I smiled, mumbled my parting, and fled.
